All About Blocks

How much do you know about blocks? Read and then quiz yourself at the end!

In t-shirt quilting, a “block” is a square or rectangle. Lots of these joined together make a big square or rectangle which becomes your quilt.  One quilt can have many or very few blocks.

Each block can have many or few pieces. In this picture of a quilt there are 16 blocks (the white squares). If the white square represents one t-shirt, then each block would consist of 1 piece which would be the t-shirt.

A block can also contain several pieces like the colored triangles below which are called half-square triangles. See if you can identify them in the middle picture which makes one of the 12 blocks in the quilt. Each of the 12 blocks is made up of 29 pieces. Would you have guessed that the entire quilt, shown on the right, is made up of 428 pieces

Pop Quiz  – Test yourself. Can you tell how many pieces are in each of these blocks? Check your answers at the bottom.

We’ll work with you to come up with a design that you like that includes everything you’d want to include in your t-shirt quilt in your choice of colors and fabric. Blocks can be all the same, but each one can also be very different.
